What do you currently teach and what have you taught in the past? I currently teach second grade. I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and Latin for third, fourth, and fifth grades.
What attracted you to teaching at Providence? I certainly felt called to be a part of what the Lord was doing and is doing at Providence. Having our children at Providence, I was able to see first-hand the blessing that classical Christian education is for our children, family, and community.
What inspires you to teach year after year? Education, to me, is oxygen. I am passionate about learning from the perspective of Truth. The students continually encourage my heart. It is my desire to strive to be a teacher that creates an environment in which parents partner with me as we seek to encourage each child to become all that God has called him or her to be. It is truly an opportunity to be able to present all of learning through the lens of the Gospel. Teaching classically has opened my eyes to learning in a whole new, meaningful way. It affects how I view all of life.
Have you or do you currently have children at First Presbyterian Preschool and/or Providence? Our three boys attended First Presbyterian Preschool. Our boys, now 14, 13, and 10 all attend Providence Christian School.
What is something interesting about your family? I am thankful for the leadership and example of my parents. They encouraged my brother, Brad, and I to take part in worthy discussions around the dinner table, encouraged me to articulate why I think the way I do, and, most importantly, as a woman, my mother set an amazing example for the rich, devoted study of God’s Word. I can still picture her morning routine, which began while it was still dark, as she studied, intensely, the Word of God. I am forever thankful for the godly example of my parents. I am so grateful for my amazing husband, Ben, who continually shows me what a servant leader looks like and who is a blast to do life with. Our three boys continue to teach us and make us smile as we see them growing into three young men, learning what it means to be men of faith and virtue.
What university did you attend? I graduated from Samford University.
Where have you lived? I was born and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri. Our family moved to Dothan, Alabama when I was a sophomore in high school. I attended Samford University and lived in Birmingham after graduating. My husband Ben and I moved to Dothan for his work approximately 13 years ago.
What is an activity you especially enjoy besides teaching? I love to read. I am still a learner! With three boys, I am learning a lot about life outside, and we enjoy cheering on our boys in athletics.
What is a special memory that you have? I am blessed with so many memories that are special it is surely hard to narrow it down to one. I would say the most defining moment for me was as the Lord opened my eyes as a college student to my great need of Him while I was working at Kanakuk Christian Camp. I could not and will never be good enough. I was (and am) a sinner in desperate need of resting in the finished work of Christ on the cross. I remember distinctly looking at a stained glass window as the Holy Spirit was working in my heart and seeing a lamb that was on a rocky cliff and was sliding off the cliff. There was a Shepherd grabbing the lamb. I realized that is exactly the picture of me. My life was redeemed by the Great Rescuer.
Three adjectives you aspire to: I seek to be the following, but certainly fall short: Christ-like, dependable, engaging.
What is a favorite passage of Scripture or a favorite quote of yours? Colossians 1:15-20. "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”
